Eduard Haas III invented PEZ dispensers in Vienna, Austria....believe it or not, as an aid to stop smoking, they were not intended as a sweet treat! The word PEZ, comes form the German word for Peppermint, PfeffErminZ, taking the 3 capitalized letters to form the word "PEZ." The first PEZ candies were sold in 1927 but the original PEZ dispensers were designed in 1949, they then made it to the United States in 1952.
